Research

Sean’s research broadly focuses on health behaviour change with the ultimate objective of modifying exercise cognitions and behaviours to prevent or manage chronic disease. His research seeks to understand how and why some individuals engage in health-promoting behaviours, like exercise, while others find it incredibly challenging.

More specifically, Sean’s research examines a one-sided thinking style called cognitive errors. Cognitive errors represent a biased and negative lens through which individuals view certain situations, like exercise. This biased lens makes deciding to exercise more difficult and can ultimately lead to the decision not to exercise.  Faced with deciding whether or not to exercise, some people might exaggerate their situation and think, “there’s just no time to exercise”, and decide against exercise without thinking through the decision. His research seeks to develop a counselling technique, called reframing, to help individuals to modify their biased exercise thoughts.
